Welcome to my 52 from 52 blog! Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy this enough to come back for some of my future posts.
Let me start by explaining what the name of the blog means and why I chose this concept. 52 from 52 is in reference to the number of weeks (52) I plan on posting and the approximate perspective of my lens in mm. I’m shooting all of my pictures with my Nikon D5200 using a prime 35mm f/1.8 lens. Even though it’s a 35mm lens, the lens perspective is closer to 52mm because the D5200 is a crop sensor. What does that mean? Without getting into all the crazy details (partially because I’m still learning them) when shooting with a crop sensor you have to multiply by a number 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 to determine the adjusted perspective of the lens. In my camera’s case the multiplier is 1.5, so 35mm X 1.5 = 52.5. Now you’re probably asking why did you choose that lens over other lens such as wide angle or a zoom? Well after doing a lot of reading I learned that a good representation of what our eyes see is ~50mm, therefore by shooting with a lens that mimics human eye you’re getting to see things from my point of view. If you’re interested in learning more about how the eye’s viewing perspective relates to a camera’s, check out the link below.
Now that you have a better understanding about what 52 from 52 represents, the question is why did I choose this concept? As I previously said one reason is because this lens closely mimics the human eye’s perspective but that doesn’t fully answer the question. As I continue to learn more about photography I wanted to challenge myself by having to get a good picture each week. Shooting pictures with a prime lens requires a little more planning and attention to where you are in reference to your subject than shooting with a zoom lens. If you have a zoom lens you can back off or zoom into your subject, while with a prime lens if you don’t like the view your feet are the zoom. Shooting with a prime lens is going to force me to really get out and explore the area’s I’m photographing in order to get the best shot.
That last thing I want to quickly explain is what to expect in this blog. Each week I’m going to get out and shoot something interesting, or at least try to. With each picture I’ll give you the story behind it and why I decided to take the picture. I’ll also try to tie my pictures back to some sort of photography technique, concept or lesson that I learned. Overall I want this blog to be a learning experience for me and you! Hopefully after 52 weeks I’ll be a better photographer and you’ll still be reading.
